I'm sorry guys but the setting of the episode in the submarine with Sonny stuck in the torpedo tube was so unrealistic as to make me question everything about the series. I'm not talking about the scenario of Sonny actually being stuck, I'm talking about whole environment that encompassed the story.
Watching the cast moving thru the sub brought back memories of watching Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea with its ridiculous cavernous spaces. I was waiting for the window scene into the ocean. Submarines ARE NOT built like surface ships with those thin steel doors every few feet and myriad compartments. They have small diameter, thick watertight hatches at the ends of each compartment that can withstand the same sea pressures as the compartment bulkheads.
The torpedo room itself was ridiculously spacious. Torpedo tube doors have locking rings on them that rotate into place locking those 'fingers' on the doors, you could see, to the 'fingers' on the tube itself. There is also a large nut/gear assembly on the locking ring that can be used to manually override the hydraulic system that normally rotates the ring. Had the locking ring been there like it should have been that would have basically negated the premise of the whole episode. All of that was missing so I'm still trying to figure out how, exactly, the torpedo tube door was stuck to the tube? And the so-called cutting that was done was also pretty stupid really. It would have done nothing but mark up the side of the tube.
The torpedoes themselves were anything but. They also looked fake as hell. I know what Mk48 ADCAP torpedoes look like and those were not them. They weren't even close. All they were were some kind of large pipes with rounded end caps glued or welded to the ends. They looked more like storage tanks than torpedoes. In addition, at battlestations, which was the condition the sub was supposed to be in, that torpedo room would have been filled with torpedo and fire control personnel loading torpedoes and getting ready to fire them. Where were they? Taking a break backstage?
And the sonar display in the so-called control room. What a joke. A Sonar display does not look like a radar display. There is no sweeping action. In addition sonar is in its own isolated area not sitting right in the middle of the control room out on its own. At least there were no stupid background 'pings' going on, especially as they were supposed to be rigged for ultra-quiet. I guess we should be thankful for small favors.
Seriously, whoever was responsible for that farce needs to be fired because he/she doesn't have a clue!
