A very shallow drag of a historically inaccurate movie about China getting absolutely curbstomped by 12 different countries in 1900, sprinkled with great set pieces, action scenes, soundtracks, and pyrotechnics. The outstanding part about the characters really is how boring they are for the most part, they're mediocre at best. If you're really into 1880-1900s action, this movie's got a good amount of it, but the rest of it will drag. Otherwise, walk away and watch other marginally better options like Zulu. 5.5/10 overall, personally a 6.5/10. Recommended? Not really.

Shallow story, shallow characterization, could do with more run time. It's more of a pilot and came from a small budget, which i'd say is well spent on the animations and music, although it does feel cheap still (questionable model texturing and midi sounding music). If you don't expect much from it, you'll like it. If you expect it to be a proper anime, go find a different one.
