Started playing the old Elite in the 1980s. Ive been Playing Elite Dangerous for about 4 years now. If you are into fast-paced shooter style games then this is not for you. ED has it's share of edge of the seat combat but the game is so much more than that. If you enjoy trading or exploration then you will enjoy ED. There are combat roles but much time is spent flying from one star system to another or just sitting at a nav beacon waiting for someone to show up. I have spent days just hunting down ingredients so I can engineer my ships components to make them faster, more powerful, etc.This is the kind of game that requires you to spend days and weeks searching out people, places and items and then using them to complete missions. I have spent months exploring parts of the galaxy only to be killed and lose it all... this is how it goes in ED. Nevertheless, I love the game and still play it. The only negative to me is that you cannot land on world with atmospheres,only barren, airless ones, which can get really boring.
