HIStory in America, and in fact the world, has been written by men. In The United States, until very recently, by white men. The 1619 Project endeavors to include the history of all Americans in Americas history books. When I was in school, we were taught HIStory - not OURstory.
Achievements of women (50% of the population), and men and women of color were barely given any mention and certainly historical events like slavery, the confinement of Native Americans to reservations, Chinese exclusion act, Japanese internment, etc. were never subjects in our HIStory classes. It’s about time we teach both the good and the bad in our schools and universities. Truth will make better citizens of all of us. And we need to remember that as individuals we are not responsible for what our forefathers might have done or not done but it is our job to ensure past actions aren’t perpetuated.
