I'm convinced that people love it because this is one of those books that people read to make themselves feel smarter than others. I've read lots of sci-fi and lots of fantasy, and I think sometimes writers mistake complex storytelling for good storytelling. There were so many times through this series where I felt like something great was building up, only for it to be so overstated that I couldn't help but feeling that the story was up its own rear end before it earned the right to be, always hammering down how much you need to know about something rather than letting you find out with the story itself. This was a one and done for me.
