I've never written a movie review here before and honestly I'm not even a Godzilla fan. I've only seen Shin (which I thoroughly enjoyed) and a couple of the forgettable American ones. But this film hit me in such a way that I was not expecting. After watching it, I could not stop thinking about it or talking about it. To my relief, they extended the screenings so I dragged my dad to go for my second time. I plan on watching it at least one more time before it leave theaters. I've almost never had the desire to watch multiple times in a theater so this is a first for me.
I equate this feeling to when I was a child and watched Jurassic Park for the first time. I was in awe and so entertained BUT I think this is even a notch better than that. The characters are so well developed and likable. The story is compelling. The pacing is almost perfect. There was never a boring moment, to me.
Sure, this is not an arthouse movie but it is so rare that an action film creates this balance of a character driven storyline, action, feel good moments, devastating and fearful scenes. I love esoteric art movies but this is also what movie making magic is. To make something that seems trivial on the surface but actually makes you feel things and draws you in.
