I think it was just thrown together for "gottacha" moments. It was just plain lazy writing with outcomes that were anit-aniticpiated. At this point what did they have to lose? The last Star War movie was so terrible, there's no way they could have fixed it. This was a Skywalker saga, not a Palaptine saga...ooops "Gottcha"!
