I enjoy true crime documentaries but this was truly terrible. Elisa Lam's story is an important one but not so important that I needed to watch 4 hours of it. I think that the bigger issue that needed to be touched on was the negative effect that the web sleuths had on the investigation as a whole.
All these people got attached to a girl because of a clip that was trying to inform the public and help find her. But instead of doing that these people just made the story so big it really only had one acceptable ending which was murder. Which wasn't the case. That was never touched on which it should have. That was the real issue here not that Cecil Hotel or the poor singer who got falsely accused of murder. These people thought that they knew more than the experts that do this for a living and when the truth came out they were unhappy. That is the bigger lesson of this documentary. That is what should have been talked about more. I think that the way that they feel towards Elisa was unhealthy and that should have been talked about. they didn't know her. But they think because they saw a video and did a minuscule about of research about her that they are allowed to talk about her likethey know her. That pissed me off the most you didn't know her.
Those web sleuths had no business talking on this documentary this should and could have been about the ways in which social media affected the investigation. This was NOT true crime this was 4 hours of conspiracy theorists talking about themselves and then learning that they were wrong.
