A thorough , detailed, yet very readable book filling in the picture of the campaign to abolish slavery in British law and debunking a number of myths about the heroism of the British state in that abolition. It was disturbing to read of the ‘great and the good’ who opposed abolition and also of the racist attitudes held by many abolitionists despite their abhorrence of slavery .
