This movie is based on a book that was meant to be fictional and the movie should’ve been promoted that way instead of being promoted as a biopic. Because people who don’t know anything about Marilyn Monroe are going to think that this is what really happened to her and this how she really was and this narrative is completely false and it should’ve been told that way. This is basically the Inglourious Basterds version of Marilyn Monroe‘s life
This film is full of events that never happened to Marilyn. They also didn’t even touch on the fact that irl she had difficulty conceiving bc of endometriosis which could have been a nice narrative for women with similar struggles. There’s no character development and the director over sexualizes both Marilyn and the actress playing her. They make it seem like she wasn’t smart and only got her big break bc a studio exec SA her when in fact she was a very intelligent business women. This movie is grossly exploitative. They make her looks miserable and didn’t show any aspects of her life outside of men and movies. So we learn nothing about her. They never show the real her. Her creating this persona was intentional and any research would’ve told the filmmaker that she did this with intent and her really personally was reserved and somewhat prudish. Which makes all the gratuitous sex in the film out of place. The director makes her a victim. This was a very lacking excuse of a character study. Zero dept on the issues it present. There’s no empathy present in the narrative and it seems she’s purposely centered around men, with no positive females in her life to push the basics that she was promiscuous. That’s a false perception created from her being sexualized that could have been explored but was instead further perpetuated her. As a contrast Grace Kelly was actually very promiscuous even dating married men but was perceived as cold and stoic so it was more believable that she was a good girl. What’s the point of this film? This wasn’t a character study and didn’t bring anything new to the story. It was the director’s way of punishing her for her flaws bc he clearly didn’t like her. No one with respect for Marilyn Monroe would make a film like this.
