They had the guts to use the original ending from the book, but they put so much sugar in it that you could suffer from hyperglycemia and that's means not exactly a "bittersweet ending" ... Octavia Spencer had more charisma and appealing as the grandmother than Jahzir Bruno as the grandson (the boy) but she's too young for the character (sugar formula) ... the "girl in the picture" tale was replaced with a whatever generic "transformation" story ... sadly the Anne Hathaway's characterization and physique had a lack of authority and intimidation, but she tried, maybe that "big puppy dog eyes" wasn't correctly used by the director to express more menacing and evil with charm...
At the end this movie is not great, is very average with a lot of distracting color lights ... good for the family as a disposable entertainment? yes ... a Classic? Nope ...
