I don't want to trash this book since I am only reading it for a class, but it is unbearable. The words are difficult to understand (due to when it was written), so you must google every other word. The story is slow with little plot and a lot of description over things that seem very arbitrary. Overall skip this book.

Upton Sinclair did not intend to start the FDA, and the books main focus was not even on meat (which is highly misunderstood). It is about the exploitation on immagrants during the American industrial revolution. In the book the livestock is a metaphore to represent the immagrant working class. This book is very hard to understand, but should defenetly be read.
