In terms of overall movie quality, Uglies gets a two, and that's a little generous. However, in terms of enjoyment, I could not give anything lower than a four, even if much of the fun is laughing at the movie's unintentional corniness. Don't go into this movie expecting anything life-changing, but bring a good attitude, and you'll probably have fun. Just don't take anything too seriously, and let yourself roll with the many dumb parts. It is pretty unfortunate, and a decent oversight, to have the main evil plan of the villain, who is played by a transwoman, be to force teens to get surgeries so that they can be controlled. This doesn't smell of conscious transphobia or anything deliberately malicious, and it's good example of transwomen being cast in roles that allow them to play characters that exist outside of the actor's own trans experience, but it is kinda a bad look for the movie in the present exceptionally hostile climate of anti-trans discrimination. I really do think that if this movie had come out in 2012 and not 2024 it would have been beloved by many tweens. It feels like a movie out of place, having missed its window for success. Go see it if you want something dumb and fun to watch and if you enjoy your movies' attempts at exploring rebellion and government tyranny to have the same nuance as a liberal Gen-xer's tweet in 2016 comparing Trump to Palpatine.
