This movie is unbearable and gives me a bad headache!
I was excited to finally watch EEAAO and wondered if it lived up to the hype before I played the movie. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if I were high or watched it after magic mushrooms. For those who gave it 5 stars, I wonder what they consider a good movie.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong, watching Michelle Yeoh since I was a kid. One thing I enjoyed in this movie was the martial arts, but not much else. As a Cantonese and English speaker (I also understand Mandarin), I find it difficult to follow when they switch between languages—Cantonese, Mandarin, then English. This language cycle happens not just in the first 15 minutes but throughout the entire movie. Besides the language jumps, the movie shifts from one universe to another every few seconds. While the movie is about multiverses, the execution is poor. Around 45 minutes in, I experienced motion sickness while watching at home, without the dizziness from IMAX or 3D.
Labeling this as a comedy completely misses the mark. Personally, I think it's cheap and stupid. Turning ratatouille into the raccoon version and the everything bagel are pure dumbness. The use of dildos and butt plugs in the movie is poorly done. There's a way to make it funny, but cheap is the word I'd use for EEAAO. Honestly, I was asking myself, "What the heck?" halfway through the movie.
The storyline is basic—an neglected mother seeking her father’s approval, dealing with a rebellious teenage daughter, and facing a failing marriage despite her husband's love. Shame, guilt, and confusion are the prime emotions in this movie. Is it a complicated story or just a relabeled version of many others? Like all human beings, we're all looking for love and acceptance. So, I wouldn't say the storyline is outstanding, nor, as others claim, it is an emotional roller coaster.
I rarely write movie reviews, but I’m filled with disappointment and still dealing with a headache due to this movie.
