This movie sorta challenged me as it pertains to whether or not the actions of the King and that of the Chief were justifiable. As brutal as the King’s action were in the latter part of the movie, I feel the motivation was justifiable. Maybe his actions could have been different but the motive and reason for his actions were in my estimation, justifiable.
Yes, he initiated what started it all, but as King that was his right. So considering that fact, the Chief was totally in the wrong. Also, if you remember at the start of the movie, one of the soldiers took one of the girls from the palace and it was established that such actions were cause for execution. The Chief acknowledged that and asked the king to forgive the soldier since it was his first lack of judgment. That soldier too was motivated by list or love which ever it was. Regardless of which the price for doing so was death. The Chief knew this.
The Chief knew what the punishment would be for sleeping with one of the maid in the palace much less the queen. He chose to ignore that fact. Passion or love does not excuse the knowledge of what his actions could mean.
In addition, the King forgave him and he promised not to meet with the queen again. Once again, he made a choice which cost him his manhood. How is the King at fault? Please remember everyone involved knew what the consequences of their actions could be and made a choice to do what they desired to do.
The question is, was it really love if it came by deceit, betrayal and lies? This was not just another woman, this was the queen. In my estimation he was justly dealt with. Harsh as it might seem, it was still the King’s sovereign right to decide what the punishment was.
Even in death the King showed the Chief mercy. He could have outright killed him, having wounded the Chief first, but he allowed himself to be killed because he truly loved the Chief. Now that’s what love is and does.
