As a fleabag/Bridgerton style rom-com independent of Austen’s work this might have been easier to watch… but putting the name of Austen’s beloved novel Persuasion to this is a crime.
For a start, the only character that resembles their novel counterpart, at all, is Mary. Anne is SO far removed from her character that I question whether or not the script writer read the book. Secondly, all of the historic culture has been stripped from this film. The manners, values, and customs have been replaced with modern “ex problems”, robbing the story of its original depth.
Persuasion is one of my all time favourite novels and it deserves a great adaptation. This wasn’t it.
