A cinematic experience with a lackluster plot line.
I really enjoyed the first movie. It seemed imaginative and inspired. It was different from other movies that I've seen, and I appreciated that aspect. However, the second installment in the series just fell short of the same awe-inspiring sensation.
Spoilers: Kinda?
Overall, the cinematography was well executed. The sound also captured the scenes well. However, my main issue was the plot line.
There were so many played out elements about this movie that have been seen time and time again. To me, it lacked originality and imagination.
You have the "Chosen One" who must fulfill the prophecy, and yet they don't want to accept their fate and take on that responsibility, in fear of the power they would possess.
Paul is an outcast in the Fremen and has to earn their trust. Only for most of them to eventually accept him and consider him the messiah.
Paul has to save the people from their oppressors and deliver them to paradise and freedom.
Paul has to drink the poison to ascend to his full potential. He could die from it, but we all know he won't.
A lot of these plot lines are just very unoriginal and boring. We've seen them so many times, they just don't have the same effect anymore.
A lot of the scenes in the film were relatively predictable and anticlimactic.
The scene where Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen enters the arena to fight and prove himself was downplayed. I was expecting an extraordinary battle to prove his worth. Instead he fights three mediocre men who were drugged beforehand and could barely hold their own. To me that whole scene was overhyped. It would have been more thrilling to see Feyd fight some new, visually appealing beast. Something a little more involved and thrilling.
Also, something that deeply disappointed me was the fact that "The Voice" effect was hardly used at all in the second movie. The 1st movie made it seem like they were building up to more of this power for the second movie. In the first movie, Lady Jessica was trying to get Paul to learn and practice to use "The Voice" more. She even had Gaius Helen Mohiam test Paul to see if he was worthy of learning the ways of the Bene Gesserit. So, they made it seem like the second movie was going to expand on this power as well as other powers they possess. I think this power was used maybe 2 or 3 times in the movie?
For a civilization so far into the future, you would expect more technology. I feel like a lot of the weapons, armor, and the arsenal were too modern for that era. Swords and Nukes? I would have loved to see something futuristic and inventive. It ends up coming across as uninspired and almost like a budget cut.
Don't get me wrong, I love me some Javier Bardem. However, his accent in real life is SO thick, and it definitely shows in this film. It was difficult to understand him in the movie, especially without subtitles. With that being said, there were countless scenes with other characters that I could barely understand. They mumble a lot and were very incoherent. They definitely should have worked on having the actors speak up and enunciate more.
I could go on more, but I think you get the gist. Overall, I think the movie was a major let down. I think they could have done far better. Hopefully the 3rd movie is not as boring.
