Perhaps not a masterpiece or perfect, but it succeeds on its own terms. By unexpected turns poignant, sweet, crass, funny, satiric, brutal and sad, it's a singular experience. Ultimately it got me. In a different world than your average Germany-during-the-war film, thank God , and done with a brilliant cast.
