I think East of Eden is philosophical, ideological, political and at the same time so simple and down-to-earth, and it has a clever plot that surprises until the end, but it's the familiar story of ours told in a novel way. I'm an Iranian Muslim but I didn't feel any idiosyncrasy while reading perhaps because of the cultural transcending power East of Eden possesses and makes it really and literally John Steinbeck's magnum opus.
