Don’t listen to the review bombing, but also don’t listen to the 5 Star reviews. This is an honest review by someone who enjoys Dragon Age, and isn’t being motivated by hate or greed.
I give the game 7/10. Be aware the following review CONTAINS SPOILERS
Good Aspects:
• Solas and Lavellan’s romance can have a happy ending. If you’re anything like me then you’ve been waiting a long time to resolve the heartbreak of Solas leaving Lavellan at the end of Trespasser. If you make the right choices you can guarantee that the two will be together
• Scenery. The scenery is absolutely stunning. From the forests, to the cities, the animation is insane
• Character Arcs. This game has multiple strong character arcs for your companions that make you have to sit back and go “oh…wow”. Specifically Bellara and Harding. Make sure to pick Bellara for the wards in the final fight to get her full arc.
• Manfred. Everyone needs a skeleton butler
• Romance. The romances are cute, with compelling writing. Harding and Taash get together if you don’t romance either, and Neve and Lucanis become a couple too. Emmrich will start dating an NPC you meet towards the beginning of the game. All non-Rook related romances have cute background conversations.
• Character cameos. Specifically Dorian, Isabella and the Inquisitor. Hawke and Cole are mentioned too.
• Damning choices. Act 1 has a “lose-lose” choice situation that sets the course for the game. Do you save the small defenceless town of Treviso? Or do you throw yourself into the fray and protect Minrathous? Saving one will destroy the other. Will you let the Venatori take over the biggest city in the game to save a town of civilians, or will you sacrifice it to the blight to stop a cult from manipulating everything? It’s a crushing choice that will leave you with long lasting consequences. Act 3 has you choose who will lead the second charge. It seems like an innocent enough choice but the person you send will ultimately die for you.
Bad Aspects:
• the Darkspawn are not Hurlocks in this game. They’re zombies. It can be explained away as “new creations” but it’s still a shame that the game changed their design
• Dorian’s redesign 😭
• Clunky dialogue. Look, all games have rough dialogue. Sometimes the wording in conversations can be rough. Sometimes it feels disjointed. It’s not awful but it’s noticeable
• HoF and Hawke are nowhere to be found. It stands to reason that we should've had at least a missive or something from the previous protagonists. Both characters are alive and well to most players, so it feels strange that two strong fighters do not lend a hand to fighting the blight
• The game soft-canonises previous ambiguous choices. Specifically Morrigan drinking from the Well of Sorrows.
A lot of people complain the game is “too woke” but let me remind you that every Dragon Age game has been “woke”. Every damn BioWare game has had some aspect of “wokeness” since the 2000’s. If it’s such a hard concept to accept then play something else. If you can play Origins then you can play Veilguard
