Had I never read Jim Carroll's The Basketball Diaries, I more than likely would have given this film four stars. It featured one of Dicaprio's greatest performances. However, the poignancy of Carroll's prose was somehow lost in the trasition from book to film and that's a shame because the film barely scratched the surface of Jim Carroll's literary voice and brilliance which make the Basket Ball Diaries the cult classic it has become.
