I read this book in the eighties when I was young, and I am happy to say that I could appreciate the beauty of the simplicity that the author evoked. We live in a fractured world, with 24-hour newscasts with endless violence, hatred, division, war, and famine. Yet, my lifelong love of reading enables me to be transported to a more civilized period, where a group of women gathers to discuss books and set an elegant table graced with fine china, crystal, teapots, and flowers grown in their gardens they proudly tend to themselves. The beauty of this story for me this is how they chose to control their environment with beauty, elegance, and grace; it seems outdated, foolish, and to many people ludicrous, yet, how many of us would love to walk into a home that evokes a feeling of security, love, gracious goodwill towards all visitors, as though our visit has brought this person joy from our mere presence, elevating our self-worth by their kindness towards us, how different society should be, if we strive to make our corner of the world a fragrant bouquet of service towards those who grace our lives with their presence.
