The book offers a detailed analysis of how Islamism took roots in the Sultanbeyli province of Istanbul in the 1990s and 2000s. In this regard, detractors of Islamism should read it carefully to understand their own failure to notice a radical transformation before their very eyes, and to reach out to poor immigrants who just left their villages for Istanbul. The book also offers a guideline for left-wing social movements, long defeated in Turkey, about how to build hegemony from neighborhoods, colocal networks and associations. This is a must have lesson for the so-called Turkish left.
