Just watched this on Netflix. What made the film laughable was the black judge & the boyfriend of Rose plus Asian police lady. In the right film they'd be very good.
In a film set in a small English town, around 1920.
Just so incongruous. Imagine, a white actor playing a black jazz singer from the same period in a biopic. How ridiculous would that look and sound.
Could have been a damn fine film without the glaring mis-casting issues.

Watched this on TV with my wife. It's just a bit too "clever" for it's own good. We kind of "got" some of what was what was going on without fully comprehending everything. Indeed, aspects of the film appeared truly baffling (to us anyway). Boring too.

Really enjoyed this. Found it on Netflix. Kept waiting for something heartbreaking to happen to one of the characters. It didn't. Kind of charming and feel good. It seemed to capture the spirit of the time. Loved the wonderful cinematography & fashions. My wife enjoyed it as well. Nigh on two hours run time swept by. Well worth five stars.

Way, way too much violence. No subtlety at all. Not worthy of eight episodes. Three tops, would have been about right. Plot was ridiculous. Got through seven and a bit, then had to give it up, after more torture.

Only just gotten around to watching this on Netflix. It was as bad as the other one star reviews indicated. I felt the whole story stunk. I kept checking on how long it had left to run. The last ten minutes or so appeared to have been devised because the writers could not think of anything better to conclude the whole debacle.
