It's a unique jrpg, It has some of the tropes of the genre but they managed to step outside the comfort zone and give us something new in the franchise. No game is perfect, but I believe that most of the criticism towards FFVIII comes from those who were expecting to find the familiar environment that even the previous installment in the franchise had.
