So from the trailer you would hope that this film would offer what the 1995 didn't. But you would be wrong.
The film is called Mortal Komabt however at no point does it take place, instead you are given pointless fights between characters that make no sense. Next there's Lewis Tan as Cole Young the protagonist an MMA fighter with a 13 year old daughter (makes you wonder how old he was when he had her as he looks very young) anyway, he is not a character in Mortal Kombat he's a made up guy who is a descendent of a lost bloodline. If they wanted Lewis Tan to be in the film then cast him Liu Kang...but don't because he's a terrible actor. This movie had every opportunity to give the fans what it wanted, proper Mortal Kombat with existing characters. Liu Kang is the protagonist and always has been doesn't even turn up till 45 minutes into the film. Why make up a random characters when you have 45 of them in the game? There was no sign of Johnny Cage who is also a main character but I'm guessing they left him out because of diversity reasons. The film makes alot of assumptions about the audience that will watch, one of which is that you know who Tsang Sung is when you are introduced to him in Outworld, they make no attempt to show his story or what he does and Outworld itself looks like some bad cosplay arena. Sonia Blade, well she was useless in the first one so they were consistent with that one as she's just as useless in this one. Jax is actually pretty good and played very well. Both Scorpion and Sub zero were marketed as main characters but barely in the film, Joe Taslim carried the film when he was in it. Raiden, also was disappointing he's supposed to fight and lead, he does neither. The bad guys in the film other than sub zero were pretty poor, Millena wasn't bad but the others were very sub par although Prince Goro was actually good.
Overall this film lacked in conviction and made the story very confusing for the audience who loved the game, they focused too much on discovery and not on the powers that these characters had, they did however give the fans game like finishing moves but wasn't enough to make the film better. They have opened it up for a sequel which I hope they take on board the feedback from the fans. MAKE IT BETTER AND GET RID OF LEWIS TAN. He cannot act and has no bearing on the film as you cannot select him when you play.
