I’m not reviewing the album. When I listen to Gary Clark Jr recorded I enjoy the majority of his songs I’m reviewing a concert we recently attended.
We heard him live at Sokol Hall in Omaha a number of years ago. A tough venue. Acoustics nonexistent. SRO in front of the stage. He was just beginning to be a go to concert.
Flash forward to last nights concert at the Astro Amphitheater in LaVista, Ne. Very pretty venue.
As we waited in line we listened to the intro group warming up. Acoustics were good.
Gary Clark Jr came on stage with an opening piece that was the beginning of what turned out to be a frustrating evening of trying to understand his words. 0r to hear him over the back up singers or musicians.
At times the back up singers were definitely not on the same key as the musicians or Gary. The keyboardist also seemed to be off.
About an hour into the concert we left. One song rang true to what I had thought to be worth attending a concert. The rest was a yelling match with disjointed accompaniment. I noticed that Gary kept fiddling with his earpiece.
We attend as many blues concerts as we can where our favorites perform. We have never left a concert early until last night.
I won’t give up on listening to Gary and may find another concert to attend just to see if this one was a bad night for the group.
