Although the book grabbed me from the start, it became very tedious in the middle. The pacing of the book is flawed, and the author resorts to some really gross scenes for what can be construed as shock value.
It is a dark psychological novel which could use more suspense to avoid “falling flat” in the middle. The concept of finding a staircase in the woods with “what lies beyond” is a good one. The book needed better editing and more suspense to keep me engaged.
If you want to read a horror book, there are so many other books out there that are less tedious and more suspenseful.
