Worth seeing. Be prepared though, this is more of an anti-Western in the vein of The Outlaw Josey Wales, although not as good as the latter, with its trippy, quixotic atmosphere and Chief Dan’s whimsical but damning telling of how the West was won. The Dead Don’t Hurt looks at the brutality of nation-building through the eyes of Vivienne and Holger, an unlikely, wayward pair looking to create an oasis in a moral and geographical desert. A story with all the complexities of real life, disappointing and sad as it may be, featuring great performances from Mortensen and Krieps, along with Yellowstone actor Danny Huston and a chilling portrayal of a psychopath by Solly McLeod. Don’t go expecting to be spoon fed ‘entertainment,’ it’s not that kind of movie, just as the ‘myth’ of the West is not necessarily the history of the West.
