A robot tailored just for your needs and to make only you happy sounds so tempting. Given that scientists sometimes find inspiration from science fiction ideas, it’s only a matter of time.
‘I’m your man’ is a gentle love story. A woman is asked to live with a robot for three weeks and decide on the ethical and practical ramifications.
You have to suspend disbelief. You’d have to hope not everyone would want a perfect mate or what would happen to the population? Would it be boring after a while, to have all your needs catered to? What about inventions? Creations? There would have to be children. We would become stagnant and of course the robots would live on. But thankfully, life is grim enough these days, this isn’t that sort of dark fantasy.
It is said that in writing there’s nothing new under the sun. Science fiction author, Isaac Asimov wrote a short story about a robot created to please its owner. (Satisfaction Guaranteed). It was published in 1951 so no love scenes.’ I’m your man’ is more 21st Century, but the love scene was discreet and mostly left to your imagination. I’m glad it was; I didn’t think lust would fit this story. And anyhow lust would only be one sided.
I had to follow this film with English captions. That meant that I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, couldn’t be distracted. But after a while, I didn’t want to leave my seat to make a cup of tea. The thought of where this story was heading was keeping me glued to my seat. Despite my all suggestions of suspending disbelief, I think i’m your man’ is worth the watch.
