This book is absolutely terrible. No one gets ANY sort of character development, the writing is horrible, it is cliche and has multiple plot holes. Not to mention the homophobia, and how creepy it is. First of all, the characters are all static, and genuinely insane. Why would you drive a dead man across the border? Why is everyone so annoying? Pita is a little crybaby who doesn't want to grow up, Odilia is a total Mary Sue, Juanita should be admitted to a mental facility, and Velia/Delia are basically the same person. There is no real plot. Everyone in this awful story must be high. The author is lazy and relies on plot devices instead of actual ingenuity. La Llorona doesn't even give the story depth. She is just a ghost who serves as plot armor for the characters. Why was there even magic involved? Nothing gets explained, and the characters rely on other, unrelated people for help in EVERYTHING. The second they run into trouble; they use their little magic earrings to just undo whatever stupid things they did. The plot has multiple logical holes and generally does not make sense. There are no explanations for why weird monsters suddenly pop up. Probably worst of all, here is a selection of disgusting quotes. "His eyes swallowed our petite female frames", "He was sexy in an older man kind of way", and "Why don't you girls see me some time?". This is disgusting. No one should ever allow pedophilic material in a CHILDRENS book. Overall, this book is disgusting. The story is boring and predictable, the characters don't get any development, and there are multiple, predatory quotes. The author should be ashamed. Edit: I enjoy English class; this review is not based on personal bias, and should not be assumed as such.
