News clips of RFK and Jim Whittaker are inspirational. The movie leaves you in awe of these preeminent Americans, and has you rooting for their next generation, mountaineering successors.
RFK -- US Attorney General, US Senator, and presidential candidate -- is legendary in a first ascent summiting the mountain named in honor of his slain brother, JFK. Jim Whittaker, first American to summit Mount Everest and the CEO of REI, is eminently accomplished. In this reenactment, the lead actor, Bobby Whittaker -- an out-of-shape alcoholic -- falls flat attempting to win over the audience with self-indulgent charisma. Chris Kennedy -- a would-be politician who cannot even win a primary and hasn't the fitness even to try ascending the summit peak -- woefully represents RFK. The inept Chris & Bobby with the latest gear, logistics, and led by a seasoned guide, still cannot accomplished what RFK and J.W. did 50 years ago -- and 30 mountaineering teams in the meanwhile. It is genuinely sad to see the gap in character and ability between these two generations.
Two stars for RFK and J.W.; none for the pretenders.
