Mr. Sunshine was a spontaneous watch. Having just found out about it a few weeks ago, something compelled me to watch. And can I just say that this show was nothing short of amazing, powerful, tragic and beautiful. This drama, after watching, only did I realize it wasn't about the romance, friendship and family. It was about grit. Perseverance. Bravery. Everybody, either from a colonized region or the colonizer, this will be a fulfilling and satisfying watch. The rope of love and loyalty shown by the people of Joseon for their homeland and for their country is a vehement one. From the start, I was hooked. After every episode, I would read recaps from blogs just to understand even more. One episode after another felt like such a breeze, a credit to the drama's stunning cinematography, making the show even more thrilling. A box of tissues will not justify the tears streaming out of your eyes, or if you're not a crier, I dare say you will feel the pain and love that the Joseon people felt. No historical drama, no romantic-comedy drama, no drama at all will live up to this masterpiece. Period.
SPOILERS
Eugene Choi. Damn, where do I begin? Your background story was painful and scarring. But you went past that and built a future for yourself. Yet, you threw that all away for the woman in black. You were lucky to have found that kind of love before you left this life. Your mother would've been of you and the life you lived. Lee Byung-hun did a freaking amazing job portraying this man.
Choi Ae-shin, the noble, wise, strong and beautiful woman. You lived up to your parent's last words, saying that no matter how long, The Righteous Army will come for the scoundrels taking Joseon's rights away. The strongest-willed character I've ever come across.
Lee Yang-hwa, you've proved that DNA doesn't make you. You were you 'til your very last breath and you deserved so much more than the short life you lived. But your mother would have turned in her grave in pride that you lived your last few years, a patriot to Joseon.
Kim Hui-seong, the joker. You always brought light to the room with that womanizer smirk and jokes. You were a hero, through and through. You spewed out jokes, with a little bit of blood as you blew your last breath. Easily my favorite character.
Gu Dong-mae. This character is definitely Yoo Yeon-seok's biggest flex. You loved Ae-shin so much that your death was peaceful as you saw her walk toward you. Started off as a villain, ended up a hero. You were a real piece of work.
