Very nostalgic game for me. But on a second play through as an adult the game is lackluster. It's fun at first but get repetitive.
Pros:
- Turn based system
- Digimon dont die
- Digimon are easier to Digivolve than the first two games
- Hundreds of Digimon to battle
- Fun card game
Cons:
- Many Digimon are reused with just a palette swap
- Many Digimon are just randomly placed in zones they have no business being in. Most of the fish Digimon dont even appear in the water. They appear on land... I don't know why so little Digimon is used in each area. They literally have several hundred Digimon to work with. You can't tell me they wont fit on a PS1 CD because they all fit on Digimon World 2.
- The rookie, champion, ultimate, mega form of enemy Digimon makes no differece. Mega Digimon are mostly incredibly weak while champion Digimon are overpowered. Some of the rookie form Digimon put the mega forms to shame. A HerculesKabuterimon appears in the same area as a palette swapped Kuwagamon but the Kuwagamon is harder. That makes no sense
- Tamer battles just suck. They all use rookie Digimon for some reason. Even some late game bosses. Then when you beat the rookie Digimon they'll just throw out a more powerful version of Digimon you have been fighting for the last hour or two to get to them. What a wasted opportunity to show unique Digimon.
- All card matches are scripted. There are no random card battles. Some are incredibly unfair and almost impossible without luck drawing the exact hand you need down to the exact card in both matches. Freezebug is a required card to beat the card tournament or the CPU will wipe you out everytime. If you don't draw it you lose
- This is a Where's Waldo type game. Do a thing and then try to find what changed on the entire map to progress. Sometimes you have to circle the map several times over which takes an eternity
- There are no shortcuts and no fast travel. You literally have to walk every where and sometimes it can take 20 minutes or more to reach your destination only to have a quest send you right back to where you came from. I remember hating this as a kid and still hate it now
- The worst part of the game is digging underground and moving around in the underground maze. What a freakin nightmare.
- Never figured out how to recruit other Digimon through both playthroughs. Finally looked it up and there is no damn way anyone would figure any of that cryptic nonsense out without a guide
- Took me 32 hours to raise one Digimon to level 46. Other Digimon sat at level 10 the entire game. No way was I spending the absolute ridiculous amount of time to raise them to be useful
- You can beat the entirety of the game with just one Digimon in your party...........
I feel so many people review this game with rose tinted glasses. I have nostalgia for it too but it's just not that good.
