When you walk into a film attached with names like Kamal Haasan, Simbu, and whispers of a "Maniratnam-level" experience, you expect magic. Sadly, "Old Concert" feels like a jam session gone offbeat.
Letโs get the biggest letdown out of the way โ this film is definitely not a Maniratnam mark. The so-called BGM tries hard to create atmosphere, but ends up sounding like a remix of leftovers from better films. Thereโs no soul, no build-up, and certainly no "Roja" or "Alaipayuthey" chills here.
The climax? Completely predictable. You see it coming from a mile away, like a WhatsApp forward thatโs been doing the rounds since 2005. No twist, no emotional punch, just a flat finale that lands like a missed note in a grand symphony.
Kamal Haasan โ the legend โ delivers. His screen presence, even in a mediocre setup, is proof of why he's leagues above. Every movement, every line, every stare โ still elite. But Simbu, oh dear. In a role demanding subtle menace and layered negativity, he comes off either bored or confused. His "negative face" feels more like heโs lost his sunglasses than his conscience. The performance just doesnโt hit home.
Direction lacks signature, the storytelling is uninspired, and the emotional beats barely register. There are moments when you want to get involved, but the film never gives you enough reason to care.
