Campaign Review:
I have played Halo since Combat Evolved as a kid. It was my first game and I've played every Halo game since. Loved every Halo game differently also.
Halo Infinite is a breath of fresh air in terms of the campaign and, in a way, spiritually rebooted the Halo series especially after Halo 5 did not perform so well.
In the beginning, we have the infinity being ambushed by the Banished whom are introduced in Halo Wars 2. We see Chief fighting off brutes until he fights Atriox, the leader of the Banished. He gets beaten and tossed off the infinity which is destroyed.
For 6 months, Chief was stranded out in space, his suit enabled "Survival mode" to keep him alive. In the meantime, the UNSC had been "beaten" and scattered. A Chief which has lost practically everything now has to gather himself, with his newfound companions, and help rebuild the scattered UNSC. Through additional in-game lore, you learn of the events that led to the Infinite being destroyed, and how Cortana basically had the entire universe on its knees.
Throughout the game, you pair up with a copy of cortana, an AI that is named "the wrapon", who is a much more bubbly and talkative counterpart of cortana - a subtle reminder and connection to the prior games. Throughout the game we hear the whispers of cortana calling out to Chief. This gave me a vibe of Halo 3: the Chief venturing out once again to save Cortana. Chief struggles a lot in the game with trusting his new companions, especially the AI, and we finally get to see the human side of Chief.
And by human side, we hear how he finally connects with the new Ai. Chief describes how he has always been a soldier because that's all he knew - "it's just part of his programming".
In the game, you learn of Atriox's "death" (he is not really dead as you learn in the end of the game post-credits scene.throughout the game you fight his right-hand man, Escharum, and "the harbinger", an ancient being with a sinister purpose of reviving "the endless". Who these endless are, why they are dangerous, and how they will aid the cause of the Banished remains to be discovered. All in the meanwhile, Chief comes to terms with Cortanas death and gets the farewell that they never got have: a moment of intimacy.
The game serves as a "spiritual reboor" due to the absence of several Halo 5 characters. The game as a whole returns to a few core characters with Chief at the center who takes on more of a leadership role. The in-game lore suggests that the survivors of the UNSC Infinity may be dead or MIA. They may be potentially scattered on the ring. It is uncertain - but, it is likely probably many of them died. Especially since the in-game lore reveals that many Spartans were killed and the UNSC was defeated during the 6 months Chief was in survival mode in space.
There are some critiques of the survival mode in space. But, then again, when has the Chief NOT bested improbable survivability odds? Crash landing on earth in Halo 3, anyone recall?
The game is amazing. I advise playing tk yourself. It is on gamepass at the moment. But, if it wasn't, I'd have still paid the $60 for it. 5/5 stars. Great work 343. Amazing turnaround for your trilogy of Halo.
