I felt like this movie had a stellar cast, but it was just horrible. It starts like a Woody Allen movie in that the lead character lands a girl way outside of his league but doesn't seem to take notice in that regard. A better romantic comedy lead than Jonah Hill, who here has his hair gelled and half-bleached would have been less distracting. His old comedy buddy Channing Tatum would've made the character work. Jonah lacks the looks and charm that this movie required. Anyway, Jonah is not at all funny. Nor is really anyone else except Mike Epps. I can't say anything bad about any actor here, even Jonah Hill other than it doesn't work as a comedy. Julia Louis Dreyfus, EDDIE MURPHY (!!!) Nia Long, David Duchovny and the lovely Lauren London each are great individually. The movie is full of stereotype after stereotype on both sides, to the point that you wonder what year was this really made. This is where I think it's a script problem, which Jonah can take half credit for. Is it 1970 or 2023? While we understand that the point of the movie is to highlight the differences in our cultures and the reasons why we have issues, it fails and attempts to celebrate such stereotypes and almost advocates for a societal segregation. It just doesn't ring true in this age- raise your hand if you are friends with those of another race or know families that are blended, or have friends that have different religiions. Probably everyone will be raising their hand. It's also too focused on 2023 culture trends in terms of fashion and music etc.- which will be perhaps stale in a few years. This coulda been a contender! But it's not. At all.
