First and foremost this was to close to stealing from Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends for it to be coincidence. Down to the main "cute" character is name Blue , whereas in Fosters its Bloo.
That aside I felt like the entire film was kinda empty. Like it was some hollow facsimile of kids movie tropes. The glow , warmth and love without any substance behind it. I dont know if A.I wrote this but I could believe it. Ryan Reynolds felt so unnecessary in the movie. I love him in everything but this was a waste of his talent. Without spoilers theres some twists that are super obvious for anyone who has seen a film before.
Alot of this played out like a horror movie about child abduction turned into a kids movie. The main girl who is 12 just walks around New York City alone with an older man who knows places Imaginary friends with new homes. Even going to an abandoned carnival , to an underground structure.....like I know its a movie but I feel like this is stranger danger territory.
Many things were all over and not explained well. The script drifted in what they were doing for the length of the film.
I went to the bathroom real quick , come back in 5 minutes and the films climax has passed. Which to build up and execute a climax in that time is poor pacing. When her dad is not doing so well , youre supposed to feel bad for her. Yet she has done anything but spent two minutes with him . You feel nothing for their relationship but are supposed to because they put the sad music there.
There was a very lazy conclusion. That made me realized there was no real effort put into this movie. Just a strong promotional campaign. If you have kids they will probably like it. I usually dont mind the kids movies I get dragged to by my child. This however was just an empty void of creation with cute characters . I am embarrassed so many big names are tied to this . It will definitely make me think twice befoe assuming a movie is good because John Krasinski or Ryan Reynolds is attached.
