A partly interesting, partly tedious book. As one who has read a great deal of history about the civil war, I did find interesting a number of the anecdotes quoted in the book. In particular, the emphasis he places on the lack of understanding both north and south had for each other puts some of the decisions and events in 1860/1861 in a clearer light than other books I have read. However, overall I found the book a touch boring compared with his other works. I also frankly found the comparison to January 6 offensive and quite off the mark. A failed riot of some hundreds is quite a long way from any of the major events leading to the civil war.
