This is regarding last night’s (3-3-24) segment regarding “book banning” in South Carolina, and other places. Two things. In the beginning of the show, it was emphasized that parents have the right to direct that the librarian not check out certain books to their children. This does not prevent students, unless other restrictive measures are taken, from reading anything they want within the library, in study hall, before and after school, etc. Secondly, at the conclusion of the show, Mr. Pelley ended with a quote from a book entitled “The Fixer”: “There are no wrong books. What’s wrong is the fear of them”. While there may some truth in this for adults, it is not true, carte blanche, for minors, who require, really deserve, guidance/boundaries from parents.
