I myself personally did not watch it because of Dwayne Johnson. I watched it because I actually knew a handful of guys who wrestled Mark Kerr during and after his collegiate days. I only know of two trainers who had fighters actually face Mark and even after their loss to Mark referred to him as a FAG due to the tone of his voice, and the way he walked around with a bent wrist.
I watched it because I wanted to see how true to the โ storyโ it actually was. This film was basically.โ milkedโ from the documentary. Iโve been told time and time again from Sean Patrick Clark, Emeritus, UNLV, that autobiographies donโt actually make good stories, in this case a movie. It took until watching this that I finally came to realize what he was talking about.
Iโve read other readers' comments about comparing this to Rocky or The Wrestler. The Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed.characters were based on the Chuck Wepner versus Muhammad Ali fight. Randy The Ram was based on countless interviews with popular professional wrestlers from the 80s who did not retire after their prime due to lack of retirement planning. In so far as comparing Dwayne Johnson to Jean-Claude Van Damme? Cโmon Van Damme movies was a martial arts-beefcake show.
I will have to agree with those that gave this movie three or less stars. I left the theater very disappointed - just as I did with Foxcatcher. Although Emily Blunt put on a stellar performance, the relationship with Mark and Dawn was much more toxic than actually portrayed.
The only thing I donโt get is why A24 and/or seven bucks productions would want to release this film during football season.
