Jewish but not Religious could not have been published at a more appropriate time – shortly after the horrific events of October 7, 2023, in Israel. Bloch has produced a well-researched discussion of the long-term challenges the Jewish People have faced and continue to face in today’s world. Of particular concern is the stagnant size of the Jewish population. Bloch compares the experiences of the various forms of Judaism from Reform to Orthodox in the diaspora and in Israel. He offers several approaches to countering the declining population trend and improving the attachment of Jews to Judaism. As a Jew who is not religious, I found the book really hit home and highly recommend it.
