I came in with high excpectations having watched z nation (black summer is the prequel of sorts to that show), with z nation i loved the cast, the general story line, the acting(most the time). So i was a little dissapointed after watching this.
While this show takes an obviously more bleak and realistic take on the zombie apocolapse, it lost what made viewers like z nation, the characters. This show you feel like you newer really know the characters, most back story we get is set 10mins before everything goes down. It also lost all the witty humour, partly this works as it makes it more 'down to earth' but if you like z nation i doubt you'll like this show, it rips away everything that made it funny but yet dramatic, tense and sad when it needed to be.
Another smaller issue i had was it was inconsistant with znation, this wont bother most as alot of people dont know this is the prequel. But for long time z nation fans it was frustrating: one of the key episodes of z nation reveal to us that these characters were in a world where zombies had exsisted as in zombie movies, shows et. So that ment those characters had a jist of what they were dealing with. However in black summer its portrayed as if theyre in a world where they have no idea what zombies are. Small issue but just one of those things that add up to make the show feel disconnected or in a different world all together
So all in all black summer is a fairly decent show, it had gore, jumpscares et. But however calling it the prequel of z nation ruined it for me. Black summer lacks story line which was what z nation excelled at. It feel like calling this a prequel was just to get more people to watch it then to actually be the prequel it could of been
