Baby its Cold Outside Debate I agree with Gayle
Listening to the debate regarding the classic Christmas song, Baby its Cold Outside, this morning (December 6, 2018) on the CBS Morning Show I have to say that I agree with Gayle. I am a 59-year-old Midwestern woman who has experienced sexual trauma and assault. I do not disregard/discount anyone’s individual feelings to anything that brings traumatic memories.
However, I believe if it something bothers an individual so much than they should not listen to the song, watch the movie, go to park, bar, parking lot, or smell the cologne. Alternatively, they can put on their big girl/boy pants, deal with their individual trauma, and not impose their distressing responses/feelings on others that that have not shared their experiences. A rabbit or butterfly can trigger a traumatic memory, are we going to ban them too.
The “me too” movement has shown people that it is okay to speak up/out and be heard. Like almost any new trend, it has the potential of going overboard, like a pendulum. It seems that the tendency is becoming presumed guilt rather than presumed innocent until proven guilty. As an older married woman, I appreciate when someone flirts with me and I sometimes flirt too.
I am afraid that flirting in the future will become a lost art. Is the practice of “moving in” for a good night kiss or asking someone out on a date going to ultimately be called assault? In the future, is society going to procreate by drawing numbers and mixing test tubes rather than intimately so as not to offend anyone, we may as well be cyborgs.
