It's refreshing to see a movie talk about latino generational trauma and the pressure these families place on their older children. Not many people will understand this movie for the very reason that they can't relate to the characters. Many children will probably see the basic plot of Mirabel not having magic and being sad and then realizing she is the magic all along. Most parents will see the deeper meaning in the story.
I love that they gave each of the grandchildren roles to portray in the family. Mirabel as the outcast, Isabela the perfect, Luisa the strong and reliable one, Dolores the quite one who picks up on all the drama but no one pays much attention to them, Camilo the troublemaker who likes the attention, and Antonio the baby of the house who everyone adores. I've seen these roles in my own family and it was interesting to see it be portrayed.
I also loved how the whole family was a mix of skin tones because that's how a lot of latino families are (mine included). I saw myself in multiple characters whether it be personality or actions.
It was a colorful movie that brought joy and laughter. I think I've watched it a handful of times already and I can't get enough of the soundtrack!
