Slow. Not horror. Unfulfilled ending.
I will admit that it is shot well with beautifully cinematic scenes and a playful use of forced aspect ratio viewing and vfx that engages the viewer. The main cast does a great job with a believeable emotional performances, despite this, the film drags terribly. And the two "musical performances", near back to back, are completely unessessary and it would not surprise me if they were "friends" of the producers.
So much could have been taken out to convay the same message, themes, and story. This is a coming of age drama with notes of Sci fi. The horror genre is about fear, suspense and edge of your seat thrills.
Although there are tense moments of intrigue that keep you watching at no point was there any fear. There is a lot potential with the story themes, nostalgia and ideas but in the end it fell flat and did not live up to the hype. It jumps around to the point that you feel important character building moments were cut to give time for artistic flare. Give this one a pass if you don't want to waste an hour and 40+ minutes of your life. (Felt way longer)
