If you have read the classic mystery novel, Death on the Nile, by Agatha Christie, you would know why I'm only giving this movie one star. First of all, the movie did not include a lot of key characters, such as Tim Allerton or Race. But instead, they replaced Allerton with Bouc, and Race with somebody else. Also, the relationships between the characters have also changed, which is very, very disappointing. I feel that the entire plot of the story has been changed, for the worse. Thirdly, they skipped the entire introduction of the characters, or possible suspects (if you will), which is about 60 pages long and plays a key role in letting the reader guess the murderer (or murderers), by themselves. Although many won't come to that conclusion at all, I find that it is still a very important part of the story. There is such a thing called cutting too many corners, and this movie is the definition of that. I am quite disappointed that this movie has turned out to be not up to the standards of the book, (and I'm not saying that it has to be amazing like the book, it just has to be somewhere around there) but way, way, WAY worse than them. I was initially extremely excited to see my favourite mystery novel come to the cinemas, but I must say, in the few minutes in, i became more and more disappointed.
(romance part of the review)
In my opinion, the 'romance' between Poirot and Mrs Otterbourne was completely unnecessary. It really did not affect the story in any way at all. And where was the developing relationship between Rosalie Otterbourne and Allerton??? It wasn't supposed to be 'oh, yeah it just happened before the events in the movie' but a PROCESS. Plus, Mrs Otterbourne was supposed to die, not Bouc.
I know, i know, I'm rambling about how the movie must be EXACTLY like the book! but I'm not. I am merely stating the big plot changes to the story, which inevitably comes to the same ending. As a result of these major changes to the plot, the tension build-up was not as good as the book, which i think they could have done well but just chose not to.
