I did not see this in the theater, but on cable a little while back. A typical (before Ozark) Jason Bateman movie, light but cute. Two things stood out for me: JK Simmons in yet another role (the man is everywhere), and Ben Affleck in the kind of light-hearted role I’d never seen him in before (or since)- Bateman’s stoner best friend who helps set the plot in motion. I’d watch it again.

I’m watching the credits on BET as I am leaving this review. I can’t believe this film is 17 years old. Maybe because I was a teenager to young adult when the “events” of the movie happened, this film really resonated with me. I loved all the performances, and in my opinion, Eddie Murphy should have won an Oscar for his performance.

I didn’t hate this movie, but I don’t think it’s as good as a couple of other things I’ve seen on the same subject. I thought it moved a little too slowly, so I entertained myself by trying to identify what accent Emily was attempting during various scenes. Same with Chris Evans, even though his accent was more consistent. Typical streaming film, really just all around forgettable. Not the actors’ fault, although seems like Evans is having a hard time moving on from Marvel.
