We are supposed to feel some compassion for the father figure (Woody Harrelson) and to feel the family's mixed but ultimately deep love and appreciation for him. I felt nothing but disgust. He is an irredeemable bad guy who scars his daughter by not letting her heal in the hospital, steals the food money to buy alcohol, starves his kids, lies to them, destabilizes them, and attacks them when they try to escape. His few supposedly loving moments are all about him, showing off his ego-centric view of the world. He wants everyone else to buy into his irresponsible vagabond self-indulgence. We're supposed to care for him? Yuck. Perhaps Woody was miscast. The character could have been genuinely mixed: basically good, vulnerable but with bad moments. Try Bryan Cranston, Colin Farrell. Not Woody please. An insufferable bully.
