After much fanfare about this movie, I was finally excited to catch it on Netflix. It was great to see a Malaysian movie grossing fantastic box office revenues. However, all that anticipation withered away as soon as the first scene played out with some random actor painted in yellow and blonde hair to play the tyrannical British officer.
This movie is entirely a propaganda hype to stoke ketuananan Malay and political Islam sentiments. Every third scene is about the Malays have been unjustly victimised by all other persons in Malaya. There is no historical truth behind the movie, except lending on the good name of Mat Kilau himself. If anything, it wrongfully depicts all other non Malay character as an evil person. If Joseph Goebbels was alive, he'd be loving this.
The cinematography was good, until it came to the fight scenes. The constant jerking to emphasise impact made the experience miserable.
This is one of the few movies that thrives on dramatic scenes. It's like almost every third minute is a dramatic scene of someone doing something although insignificant.
There's also a big play on supporting toxic masculinity and emphasising the religion supports this action.
In summary, it's a great propaganda movie. One must not forget that Mein Kempt was also unreadable, but sold more than a million copies because it was cool for the lemmings at that time. I would think the same is with this movie, a poor representation of history with an agenda to spread political Islam to the same lemmings.
